Sydney artists will feature at this year's Shanghai Biennale, after Council unanimously endorsed a $20,000 sponsorship for the 4A Centre for Contemporary Asian Art in Haymarket, which has been invited to curate a section of the Biennale's Sydney Pavilion.
The pavilion, housed in an art deco building covering over 700 square metres, with on world-famous Nanjing Road, will be the first venue seen upon arrival at the Shanghai Biennale precinct and is expected to attract more than 10,000 people each day.
It's a fantastic opportunity to promote the depth and breadth of Sydney's artistic talent to major international audiences, particularly those working with 4A in Haymarket.
The Biennale also gives Sydney a chance to further cement its place as a major business and cultural hub within the Asia-Pacific region, and build on our important and growing relationships with China.
This is part of the City's ongoing support for 4A, known internationally as Australia's peak body for contemporary Asian art and cultural thinking. Our support includes a three-year $65,000 cultural grant for the popular Cinema Alley project, and a two-year accommodation grant worth more than $115,000.
The Shanghai Biennale will run from 1 October 2012 to 31 March 2013.
