Sydney Festival & Destination NSW Board Luncheon

Hello everyone and welcome.

It is my great pleasure to host this joint lunch between the Boards of Destination NSW and the Sydney Festival to enable a discussion about:-

  1. delivering world class festivals and events to Sydney;
  2. attracting millions of domestic and international visitors; and
  3. making Sydney a global meeting place.

First held in 1977, Sydney Festival is now one of Australia's largest annual cultural celebrations with an international reputation for modern, accessible and intelligent programming, bringing productions, performances and artists that are unique to Sydney.

This signature event attracts an audience of over 500,000 people during its three week season.

In 2011 Destination NSW was created when Tourism NSW and Events NSW merged. It was a marriage of great benefit to Sydney Festival, heralding the opportunity to promote Australian arts and culture on a world stage.

The partnership of Sydney Festival Board and Destination NSW Board is helping both organisations achieve success in delivering a world class festival program to a wider audience.

In terms of the City of Sydney, the Sydney Festival delivers some key aspects of our City Cultural Policy: to provide innovative cultural experiences and opportunities that are accessible, diverse and bold and to prize big ideas and promote Sydney as one of the world's leading creative cities. ($19million contributions by the City of Sydney to Festivals in Sydney).

The Board looks forward to future collaboration to enable the Sydney Festival to become the great summer Arts festival in the world.
