I am proud to be Lord Mayor of a city where we uphold & evolve our @sydneymardigras tradition. The modern Mardi Gras parade (which we now hold in March when it is warmer) is led by the ‘78ers and our First Nations float – honouring the history of Sydney and our LGBTI community.,
We all know about the violence and arrests that brutally ended that evening, destroying jobs and families, but it is important to remember that it started the night as a party – it was a Mardi Gras.,
Today is the actual anniversary of the first @sydneymardigras which was borne on Oxford Street on 24 June 1978. This was the day that Sydney’s gay and lesbian activists first took to the streets as part of a global pride movement, sparked by the Stonewall Riots two years prior.
