I am proud to be Lord Mayor of a city where we uphold & evolve our @sydneymardigras tradition. The modern Mardi Gras parade (which we now hold in March when it is warmer) is led by the ‘78ers and our First Nations float – honouring the history of Sydney and our LGBTI community.

,

We all know about the violence and arrests that brutally ended that evening, destroying jobs and families, but it is important to remember that it started the night as a party – it was a Mardi Gras.

,

Today is the actual anniversary of the first @sydneymardigras which was borne on Oxford Street on 24 June 1978. This was the day that Sydney’s gay and lesbian activists first took to the streets as part of a global pride movement, sparked by the Stonewall Riots two years prior.
