Our city is dotted with amazing historical and artistic highlights many of us walk past every day without knowing their significance. The City of Sydney's new Sydney Culture Walks app provides 10 virtual walking tours of the streets of Sydney - six guided walks highlighting historical landmarks and four showcasing public artworks.
This is a great way to see some of Sydney's hidden stories. You can explore the city in a new way and find out about more than 400 historical and artistic landmarks.
The Sydney Culture Walks app is just one step being taken by the City to transform Sydney into a world-class walking capital.
Other walking initiatives include improving the quality of footpaths, including paving, shelter and urban design; de-cluttering footpaths for easier access; and improving signage to support walking including a uniform way-finding system.
The City is also opening new public walks, such as the Glebe Foreshore Walk, and commissioning great public art throughout or city centre and villages to enhance the city experience.
In October, I will be opening the world's leading international conference on walking, Walk21, which will be held in Sydney for the first time. More than 500 delegates from the US, Asia, the UK, Canada, New Zealand and Australia will descend on Sydney, and I hope this new app helps them discover what our city has to offer.
