I was frustrated to learn that Greyhound Racing NSW (GRNSW) has recently been offered an additional 20 years on their existing lease of Wentworth Park.
It is especially concerning that such a lease was offered while the future sustainability of the industry is the subject of a Parliamentary Inquiry. The location and size of Wentworth Park make it an ideal space to provide recreation facilities to meet the demands of the growing city community and I have campaigned alongside local residents' groups to demand that Wentworth Park be restored in entirety as public space.
The current lease runs until 2027. I believe the long-term relocation of the greyhounds to a more suitable site, and improvements to the park, can be delivered within the remaining 13 years.
Wentworth Park has the potential to become a major public asset for the people of Sydney. Last year the City and Wentworth Park Sporting Complex Trust completed the second stage of works.
I share the concerns of residents that the extension of GRNSW's lease makes further meaningful improvement to the site impossible.
I encourage you to write to the Minster for Racing asking that any decision on future leasing arrangements be delayed until the current Parliamentary Inquiry has been completed and its findings have been made public.
