On Tuesday evening, the Save Victoria Street working party hosted a very productive meeting in Kings Cross to discuss how the community, backpacker industry and I can work together to stop backpackers selling vehicles on residential streets including Victoria Street, Potts Point.
I am committed to keep working on this issue until the Premier realises this is a real issue for the community and that State Government action is required to prevent vehicle sales.
I have repeatedly asked the Premier and Minister for Local Government to make the minor change to the Local Government Act to provide Council Rangers the power to prevent vehicle sales on nominated residential streets.
I will introduce a Private Members Bill and continue to support current and additional action by the City of Sydney including rangers, parking restrictions, increased cleansing, rubbish collection and ways to beautify Victoria Street.
Rangers have significantly increased their presence and in the last three months issued 302 penalty notices to suspected backpacker vehicles in Victoria Street and since August last year, 33 vehicles have been towed.
It is critical you continue to contact the Premier and Minister for Local Government urging them to change the Local Government Act so Council Rangers can prevent vehicle sales on public roads. Their contact details are:
